Best Bitcoin Mining Software For Windows

Braiins OS is part of Satoshi Labs and is the creation of the original inventor of mining pools, Marek “Slush” Palatinus. You may also know Marek for his invention of the Trezor, the world’s first hardware wallet.

Unlike many other mining software and operating systems, Braiins is completely free. Satoshi Labs makes money off of Braiins OS by offering you incentives to join their Slush mining pool, although this is not required to use their software.

Supported Hardware

Braains OS+ currently supports Antminer S9, S9i and S9j. Support for Antminer S17 and T17 are coming soon. Thankfully, Braiins OS+ makes the S9 family so much more efficient, that it can extend the life of your Antminer S9 ASICs. It achieves this life increase through better mining efficiency, which we will cover next.

Performance

With Braiins OS, you can increase the hashrate of your S9 up to 17+ Terrahashes per second.

Braiins OS+ can also take an S9 on low power mode and deliver 20% better performance than even an S9i.

Cost

While there is no up front cost to buying the software, you will need to pay Slushpool dev fees by directing 2% of your hashing power to their pool regardless of which pool you end up mining on. However, if you choose to mine with Slushpool for all 100% of your hashing power, that rate drops to 1%.

Command Line

Should You Use Braiins OS?

There is no one more experienced in mining software than Satoshi Labs, so you really can’t go wrong. These guys are constantly innovating, so even if you are running Linux, you won’t be disappointed in choosing Braiins.

That being said, if you don’t plan to start mining with Slushpool, be aware that you will essentially pay a 2% fee to Slushpool (in the form of redirecting 2% of your hashing power to them). By mining with Slushpool, that cuts in half and becomes very attractive.

The Hive OS Mobile App

One of the great things about Hive OS is that they have a mobile app that allows you to execute all of the same functions and monitor all of the same metrics as the dashboard. With some recent updates the app also appears to function well, based on user reviews.

On top of that, Linux is by far the most open OS, which means you can make changes to it if you feel confident enough to do that.

For those that want a more traditional OS experience, windows is probably the way to go.

Best Bitcoin Mining App Software for Android

You may be wondering why I left out mobile OS’s like Android.

Well…that’s because it really makes no sense to use mining apps on mobile devices to mine cryptocurrency.

There is just not enough power on your mobile device to mine bitcoin profitably.

You’ll just bog down your device and waste our battery.

If you are serious about mining, you need to:

• Get an actual rig built for mining
• Use one of the software suites outlined above
• Manage your operation using a desktop OS like MacOS, Windows, or Linux

Why Do You Need a Bitcoin Mining Operating System?

Bitcoin mining rigs and systems have come a long way since the beginning. The first Bitcoin miners made do with the tools they had at their disposal and set up various software to control the mining hardware in their rigs.

What is CGMiner?

What us BFGMiner?

BFGMiner is designed for FPGA and ASIC mining. BFGMiner offers advanced users the opportunity to mine multiple cryptocurrencies by simultaneously hashing on mining algorithms like Scrypt and SHA256d. BFGMiner has remote interface capabilities.

What is Multiminer?

Multiminer is a free mining software optimized for Windows computers, but it also comes with directions to simply install it on Mac and Linux. There’s no need for coding or technical skills. The software is available for anyone to download and use.

What is Awesome Miner?

Awesome miner is a total software suite to manage your mining operation. It features support for as little as one and as many as 200,000 miners. What are FPGA miners?

FPGA stands for ‘Field Programmable Gate Array’. What is a GPU Miner?

GPU involves using a Graphics Processing Unit (normally used to play video games on PC) to mine cryptocurrencies. GPU mining was very popular in Bitcoin mining a few years ago, but that is no longer profitable due to highly advanced ASIC miners. Now, GPU mining is mainly done on Ethereum and Monero.

What is a CPU Miner?

GPU involves using a Central Processing Unit (normally used to run desktop PCs) to mine cryptocurrencies. Almost no one uses their CPU to mine any coins today, but it can be a god way to learn how mining works without spending much money.

What is EasyMiner?

EasyMiner is another free open-source mining software available to anyone who wants to use it and mine using their GPU or CPU.

Can I Mine Bitcoin on my PC?

You can, but you will lose lots of money doing this. The cost of the electricity will cost more than the tiny amount of Bitcoin you are able to mine with a modern GPU.

Even if you have the very best GPU on the market, it will never compete with the ASICs that are specially developed to mine Bitcoins.

Where Can I Mine Bitcoin for Free?

Unless you live in a country with free electricity like Iran or Venezuela, you really can’t mine cryptocurrency for free.

• During network outages the devices hashrate would appear static, this has been fixed.
• Did a major rewrite of the code that writes and parses the config files. Now if you choose [W]rite from the [ S]ettings menu it should write most of the options you've given on the command line. Some options were never written correctly and many weren't written at all previously.
• Changed the toggling display to sit on the most important screen and not toggle by default, but it can be re-enabled via the [D]isplay menu.

• Dynamic temperature based fanspeed and per-die clockspeed control for hashfast devices with the following new commands.
  --hfa-fan Set fanspeed percentage for hashfast, single value or range (default: 10-85)
  --hfa-temp-target Set the hashfast target temperature (0 to disable) (default: 88)
  Defaults chosen are based on extensive discussion with the design engineers responsible for the silicon and boards and basically it will keep your hashfast devices as close to the starting clockspeed as possible while keeping under~95 degrees by initially increasing fanspeed, and then decreasing the clockspeed on the hottest dies discretely. The output can be watched via the API. Enduring sweltering temperatures of up to 44 degrees here has made for an excellent real world test for this code.
• Numerous startup/reset/shutdown reliability improvements for hashfast
• Send a ping to the hashfast device at regular intervals if we don't have any work for it just so it knows cgminer is still alive to try and minimise the dreaded watchdog reboots.

• Antminer U1 overclocking support with --anu-freq note:
  By default, Antminer U1 devices run at a clockspeed of 200. This command allows you to specify a chosen frequency to attempt to run all ANU devices at and the value must be in increments of 25. Note that cgminer reports hashrate ONLY FROM VALID HASHES so if you increase the frequency but your hashrate does not increase or it decreases and hardware errors start showing up, you have overclocked it too much. In the worst case scenario it will fail to start at too high a speed.
  You basically must use --icarus-timing=short additionally to get the maximum benefit out of the overclocking (at this stage).
• Keep taking a trickle of work even if it's not being used just to keep an eye on pools and to keep the most recent work time up to date
• Make the top 'window' wider since hashes these days come in the many millions and don't fit into 80 characters

• Numerous fixes for behaviour surrounding USB errors - pipe and IO errors, and no more attempting to reset the device since it's rarely helpful and occasionally harmful.
• Libusb and libusbx have finally reconciled their differences and merged all their fixes together into a new official libusb release, so the main change in this version is updating the core code to include this latest libusb. Hopefully this might increase compatibility with some USB3 hubs on windows and make it more reliable (based on the changelogs I can see in libusb). This is the reason for the minor version number update to 12 as it's quite a substantial code change, hopefully only for the better!
• Increased the hashfast overheat limit default to 90 after extensive discussions with the engineers who designed the devices.

• A proper working hashfast driver tested working on a real device, including the windows version.

• Added a --nfu-bits command to allow you to set the clock speed on nanofury/icefury usb sticks. Note that the default was 54 so is now 50 to be in keeping with USB2 power limit standards. This means IT WILL BE SLOWER compared to 3.10.0 unless you change it with this option back to 54. The driver is otherwise unchanged so any other differences you see are pure variance.
• Threads names have been changed so they will show up with different, consistent names in your process manager of choice.
• Building will now not include libbitfury on every configuration unnecessarily.

Note the hashrate is once again based on only valid shares so may appear lower than other software using this device. This is a driver based on all the other ones out there with a completely rewritten model to suit how cgminer drivers work.

• BFL SC devices will now throttle 3 degrees below cutoff (82 degrees) and cut off work at the lower 85 degrees, restarting when they get below 80. If you wish to aim for a higher maximum, use the --temp-cutoff feature (90 was the old maximum). If you set it to zero it will disable this behaviour. (I'm preparing for our summer here Wink)

• New driver for bi*fury devices. These will come up as BXF devices. Note that if you have one of these, having 2 bitfury chips they generate a LOT of heat and will need active cooling. The first firmware for them does not have a way to stop them mining so they will get dangerously hot if you don't point a fan at them and stopping cgminer won't even cool them down. This should be fixed in their next version.
• Set priority of various threads high and low for poor performing hardware (e.g. wrt routers) or operating systems (i.e. windows) to try to minimise the influence of system usage in other ways from causing communication problems.

• OpenCL now needs to be explicitly built into binaries with --enable-opencl; it is no longer built in by default (binaries built by me still include it).
